Smith, Kelly

Kelly Smith is an Australian Illustrator, working predominantly in fashion and beauty.

With a Bachelor of Fine Art from the Tasmanian School of Art, Kelly majored in photography and graphic design, but reverted back to her love of drawing after graduating. She ran a blog and launched her career after being interviewed in Vogue about an exhibition she was mounting.

Kellyís approach is mainly traditional, with 90 per cent of the work completed using a graphite pencil. She then scans the drawing in, adding colour and tweaking the image using Photoshop. Her compositions vary Ė usually itís a case of highlighting one focal area thatís full of beauty, but in other cases she builds up a scene to surround it.

Her images are intricate, finely detailed pencil illustrations, incorporating pops of digital colour. They are soft and feminine in tone and content.

Steele, Robert Gantt

Robert Gantt Steele loves illustrating the relationship between natural and man made subjects. His paintings of architecture, for example, are made richer by his inclusion of painterly human and natural forms. The human subjects he paints, on the other hand, inhabit a convincingly detailed back ground. Robert enjoys the research needed to accurately capture the detail as well as the mood and atmosphere of his subjects. Recent projects include a commission by Smithsonian Magazine to illustrate the human character and the atmosphere of a particular small town in France. Robert studies music and is a performer in local San Francisco productions. This helped him create illustrations used for the promotion of Broadway shows such as ďShowboat.Ē He completes several book covers and childrenís books as well as many other com- missions each year. Constant studies and sketchbooks fill his free time. Robert was originally trained as an architect in North Carolina and at Berkeley. He completed further study in art in Austria as a Fulbright scholar and then in New York and San Francisco. He recently designed and constructed a new home for his family near San Francisco and is very active in the preservation of historic art and architecture. He loves his work. He and his wife Alice have two children. robertgsteele.com

Sussman, Nigel

You just canít look away once youíve seen one of Nigel Sussmanís isometric mural illustrations. Thereís so much going on Ė dancing horses, dinosaurs serving in a restaurant, people running in hamster treadmillsÖ The detail is incredible and itís all done with a lighthearted sense of humour that keeps you looking, and smiling.

So itís no wonder that Nigel has worked for both hugely innovative brands like Google and Redbull, as well as picking up more traditional print projects with the likes of Popular Mechanics and Time Out. With a musician father, creativity was encouraged as Nigel grew up and aside from drawing his passions include playing bass guitar (and illustrating his bandís album covers), Dungeons & Dragons and going for long walks with his wife. The destination is usually an eatery where tasty food is servedÖ but not by dinosaurs.

Thereís all kinds of activity going on in Nigelís work and itís no surprise to find that his influences include Martin Handford (creator of Whereís Wally?), MC Escher and the computer game SimCity. At home in Berkeley, California, he lives with his wife and a cat called Fidel Catstro.

Nigel spent two years at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, before crossing the country to the California College of the Arts to complete his degree in Illustration.

Today Nigel works on his drawings using a Wacom Cintiq tablet, but he has a good grounding in traditional media. He used to love working in pen and ink, and acrylic paints.

Bold, bright and complex, Nigelís signature style uses isometric line art and a striking but simple colour palette. He loves creating seek-and-find type drawings, as well as illustrations that feature complex fantasy architecture and/or imaginary machines.
