Hall, Mike

Crowded urban scenes, architecture and maps – the things you see today in Mike Hall’s artwork go back to his creative beginnings. As a child he used to love drawing images full of people, and maps of imaginary towns and even entire countries. He says this might be because he grew up in the new town of Harlow in Essex – the modern, pre-planned, post-war setting gave him an interest in architecture, topography and mapping from an early age.

Of course, he liked comics and picture books too, and today he’s also inspired by William Hogarth, Gustave Doré and Wenceslaus Hollar, as well as MacDonald Gill, an artist who embellished his map illustrations with all kinds of colourful motifs. He loves everything Hispanic, which is why he recently relocated to Spain.

Mike spent two years studying graphic design before switching to an illustration course. He completed an Illustration degree at the University of Westminster.

Often Mike’s hand-drawn imagery is embellished using a computer. He combines print designs he’s drawn using pen on paper with digital elements to build up an image. The colouring is done digitally. Sometimes, he’ll also draw his map designs using vector graphics.

Architecture usually plays a large role in Mike’s work – either as the primary focus of the illustration, or as something in the background that gives it structure. He’s very interested in topographical views, geography and conveying a sense of place. Nonetheless, his characters come through just as strongly with crowded, colourful people scenes giving you plenty to look at.

From then on she knew she wanted to be an artist. Nicole's primary medium is watercolor and secondary medium is digital or vector art. She typically works in bold, vibrant colors. Her subject matter ranges from animals to fantasy creatures, such as fairies, dragons and mermaids. She also focuses on subject matter for children and children's books. She has done artwork for: advertisements, children's books, invitations, logos, magazines, posters, postcards, presentations, t-shirts, and web sites.

Hargreaves, Martin

History and humor marry together beautifully in the illustrations of Martin Hargreaves, and his versatile style has seen him creating everything from pastiche images mimicking the great masters to fantastical beasts and still life paintings. You’ll find his work in advertising, children’s books, magazines and newspapers, and even at Hampton Court Palace.

It’s no surprise to learn that Martin’s greatest inspiration comes from classical painters like William Hogarth, Hans Holbein, Rembrandt and Giovanni Battista Piazzetta. In fact, he says that if he could travel back in time he would visit the 18th century, and alongside his love of Renaissance artwork he also loves classical music.

Martin works from a shed in his garden, with large windows through which he can see apple trees and the rolling hills of East Sussex. If he ever gets creative block, he likes to dig in his vegetable garden, or look after his many pets, which include two dogs, three horses, two guinea pigs and seven chickens.

Martin has a BA Illustration from Brighton Polytechnic (now Brighton University).

His approach and the media he uses vary from project to project, but he always begins drawing with a simple pen on paper until he has an idea of what direction the image will take. Martin works in traditional media – oil paints, watercolor, pen and ink – and is also adept at making changes digitally as required. The 2B pencil is his all-time favorite art tool.

Martin’s inspiration comes from the old masters, and the styles he works in follow on from that. In his portfolio you’ll see fine paintings that look just like Rembrandts, and others that are more like 18th century engravings or 19th century book illustrations. In short, he will come up with a style that suits the brief.

Harrison, Nancy

Nancy began her career like many illustrators do - crayoning on walls. Back then it was considered a bad habit, now she gets paid for it. In fact, she's doodled her way into a great career. While she now live in the U.S., she spent a big chunk of her life in Montreal (that's Mo-ray-al, if you wanna sound French). She went to Art school (big "A" like painting, printmaking, sculpture, and makin' a mess), and studied Graphic Design & Illustration, graduating with a B.F.A., and an M.A. from Syracuse, a much bigger box of crayons, and a big black portfolio to drag around. She has worked as an Art Director & V.P. for an ad agency where she learned "work week" means 80 hours, budgets are ALWAYS less than your quote, and art directors supply free psychotherapy to clients. All this helped her start her own business and she's never looked back: She loves commuting in her slippers (but sometimes hates her boss). So here she is, still doodling, though she now does it digitally. She's done more than 30 kids books, magazines galore, and teaches the occasional digital art class to torture future creatives.

Heiner, Joe & Kathy

In 1964 Kathryn (Kathy) Hughes sat next to me (Joe Heiner) in our sixth grade classroom at Ensign Elementary school in Salt Lake City, Utah. While quietly sitting at her desk, Kathy was struck by a ruler hurled at me (I ducked) by our teacher, Mr. Anderson. We became close friends. After the eighth grade, my family moved to Montreal, P.Q. Canada. It was a long time till I saw Kathy again. Kathy's family stayed in Salt Lake City where Kathy later attended East High School. Kathy married, moved to San Francisco and had one son, Michael. After returning to Salt Lake City, Kathy graduated Cum Laude from University of Utah with a BS degree in Social Sciences. She taught nursery school for two years, became a single parent and a secretary for Architects and Planners in Salt Lake City. I attended Beaconsfield High School near Montreal, studied art and photography at Brigham Young University, and Art Center College of Design, married and had two children. I assisted commercial photographers Ed Goldstien and Carl Furuta. I also assisted David Willardson, illustrator, shooting detailed 4X5 photo reference for his airbrush illustrations. Willardson taught me airbrush techniques and helped develop an airbrush / photographic illustration style. My first portfolio of ten photo / illustrations quickly generated assignments from movie studios, advertising agencies, magazines and recording companies. With the help of the same great reps who represented Willardson, assignments came from across the country. This afforded a move back to Utah. Work went well from Utah and I became a single parent. Fifteen years after sitting by Kathy in sixth grade, she married me. We now have five children (combined) and work together in our studio in Alpine, Utah. Our studio continues to create realistic photo / illustration for clients across the country. Kathy is studio manager and stylist. I am photographer / computer illustrator. Early works were a combination of airbrush and silk screen on photographic prints. Current work is digital, a merging of digital photography and computer illustration. We have received numerous awards including The One Show Gold Award and our work is represented in the permanent collection of the New York Museum of Modern Art. Clients include: Lucasfilm, Salisbury Communications, ABC records, Y&R, Foote Cone & Belding, Satchi & Satchi, Merck, McDonalds and Coca Cola. I hope you enjoy our work. Hibert, Oliver

Eye catching, colorful, bold, fantastic and at most times psychedelic is how many describe American artist, Oliver Hibert’s style of artwork. Oliver Hibert was born in Seattle, Washington in 1983. Surrounded by a supportive family of artists, it is no wonder Oliver Hibert began creating art and drawing at a young age. Self taught and determined, Oliver Hibert made his debut in galleries at the age of sixteen. Shortly thereafter, came the impressive art shows at the Phoenix Art Museum and the Tucson Museum of Contemporary Art in Arizona. Oliver Hibert’s bright palette and magical scenes caught the attention of MTV for a music video at the age of eighteen. Oliver Hibert’s particular style of fine art and design is what has caught the attention of numerous retail stores, galleries and museums from L.A. and New York to Hong Kong and London to Paris and Australia. Hibert’s vivid and colorific designs can be recognized on shoes, skateboards, magazine covers, clothing and vinyl toys, to name a few. Clients such as MTV, Nike and Yellow Book also value the unique and intriguing artwork of Hibert. In May of 2008, Oliver Hibert’s work for the London Designers Block show was short listed and exhibited for The Design of the Year Show at the London Design Museum. Oliver Hibert describes his art as an escape from the mundane, influenced, at times heavily by the music, colors and imagery of the psychedelic 60’s era. Hibert’s iconic style transcends time as it nods to the past, while being so contemporized that it speaks to the future. The art is smothered with busy patterns, alluring figures, super bright colors and plenty of exclamation marks. With Oliver Hibert’s stunning array of art, design and illustration work he certainly has a bright future ahead. Currently, Oliver Hibert works and resides in Scottsdale, Arizona on his desert farm of cacti and one thousand peacocks.

Horvath, Peter

Peter Horvath, born of Hungarian descent into a lineage of photographers, began taking pictures at age 6. After spending his formative years inhaling darkroom fumes, he worked as a stills photographer until he discovered computers in 1995 when a friend gave him a Macintosh Plus. Shortly thereafter, he happened across the work of Dadaists John Heartfield and Hannah Hoch, whose work exposed him to the world of photo-montage. He has since produced digital collage works exploring narrative, abstraction, and the hypnagogic, and continues to push the boundaries of convention, displacing the familiar and nostalgic with unique, surreal touches. Peter’s ability to master bold compositions that convey complex concepts is what makes his work stand out. His impactful images make him a natural choice for the nuances of editorial work, and the call-to-action needs of advertising. His work is featured in the newly published book from Die Gestalten, "Illusive - Contemporary Illustration", as well as an upcoming book on collage.
