Bagley, Aaron

In 2004 I received my BFA from Cornish College of the Arts. Although I was trained as a fine artist I have always been at heart a drawer (one who draws, not something you put socks in). Most of my work comes out of my sketchbook - comics, freelance work, last night's dream, weirdos I see on the bus. Most of my life exists in my sketchbooks. So, if you really want to know me ask to see my sketchbooks!

Bailey, Stephen

Stephen Bailey, a full-time freelance illustrator for over 20 years, has developed a wide variety of artistic capabilities and experiences. He prides himself with not only being able to produce the highest standards in illustration, but equally as well with his professional service needed for the agencies, companies, and design studios that he creates award winning illustrations for. Graduating from the Columbus College of Art and Design in 1991 with a BFA in Illustration, Stephen still starts every illustration with pencil on paper drawings, creating images he pulls from his imagination and creativity. Photoshop and illustrator are then used to create the final product from the scanned in pencil as a template.

Baker, Alex

Alexandra Baker grew up fascinated by both science and drawing, and like so many other medical illustrators when she first heard about the field it was a eureka moment for her. Based in Asheville, North Carolina, today she’s a leading medical illustrator, working for an array of book publishers and magazines, illuminating some the latest discoveries in medical science.

Texture and atmosphere are important elements in her work. She recalls the day when her father – who worked with electron microscopes – first showed her scans of the surface of a leaf and the proboscis of a butterfly. Today she uses various kinds of nature photography as sources of inspiration. Underwater images help her create the right mood when depicting the human body from the inside, and pictures taken in caves can help with bodily cavities. The branches of trees are reminiscent of arteries, and nature’s textures and patterns provide endless fascination for an artist who is dedicated to getting the details right.

She’s also inspired by the artists Stephen Gilbert and Frank Armitage, both of whom are medical illustrators. Outside of her art, she loves to run and took up training five years back. Since then she’s completed seven marathons and more than 20 half-marathons. A keen reader, she says her house is like a secondhand bookshop.

Baker, Andrew

updated
Andrew Baker is a successful practicing illustrator, with a strong reputation in editorial illustration and poster design. He won a Gold Award for Editorial illustrator from the Association of Illustrators in 2003, and his work has been featured in the Design, New Media and Editorial sections of the AOI Images Annual and in the D&AD annual. His work is seen in most serious newspapers and magazines, from The Guardian to New Scientist, and in on-line environments, shop windows and on posters and book covers. He is primarily concerned with using images for storytelling or conveying messages. Drawing, colour, a love for ephemera and an eye for retro design inform his work. Projects are started with drawing and completed using illustrator and Photoshop in a distinctive way. Much of his work is designed to be seen in sequential form, for example sequences of images for The Economist or the BBC web-site, but he remains passionate about the power of the single key image. Andrew Baker is a graduate of the Royal College of Art and teaches part-time on the illustration course at Middlesex University. He recently curated the SHED exhibition and contributed to Steady Gigs, The Charity Shop Compendium and Doodlearth. Recent clients include: BBH, The Guardian, The Times, Barclays Bank, The Economist, The Radio Times, Diageo, The Spinvox, Harvard Business Review, The Mail on Sunday magazine, Dorling Kindersley, Lloyds, Readers Digest books, The Telegraph, Esterson Associates, Kings College.

Billie J

Billie Jean is a he and not a she. He lives and works in Leytonstone in East London - the birth place of Alfred Hitchcock and David Beckham. He enjoys climbing trees, idling the hours away in second-hand bookshops, drinking 'Blue Vanilla' flavoured Slush Puppies, making chocolate rice crispy cup cakes, knitting tea cosies and oh yes, drawing with great skill.

Billy, Butcher

Butcher Billy is a Brazilian illustrator with a fresh approach, who loves to slice up ideas and imagery in popular culture and reassemble them in unique ways. Juxtaposing everything from Wonder Woman and the Watchmen to Morrissey and Breaking Bad, his work is ironic, humorous and very postmodern. His subtle questioning of pop culture using pop art as his medium is a juxtaposition in itself, yet in their own unique way all his images seem to make sense.

In addition to his illustration work, Billy is a creative director in a digital agency. He lived in the UK for a while, and has travelled widely. With seemingly endless influences at his disposal – including Banksy, Steve Ditko, Shigeru Miyamoto, Malcolm McLaren and Andy Warhol - Butcher Billy never runs out of moods and concepts to explore.

“I like to create freely and then realise bits of an artwork are influenced by the mood of a movie by Tim Burton, the brushstrokes of a piece by Salvador Dali, with a soundtrack from an early album by David Bowie,” he says.

He studied fine art at Otis/ Parsons before entering the animation and illustration industries where he honed his technical skills. In 1999 he gathered a community of artists and began hosting live art auctions at bars around Los Angeles. He quickly found an audience for his personal work. BloodBros.

BloodBros. is the studio of New Zealand-born illustrator and graphic artist Emile Holmewood, who currently lives in Tokyo.

Originally a graphic designer, he was once told by a studio creative director to remember he is a "graphic designer who illustrates, and not the other way around", Emile has since worked tirelessly to prove otherwise, bringing his artistic flair to everything he does.

Nevertheless, Emile’s unique style is underpinned by graphic design principles, and contradiction is central to his work: he constructs his illustrations in cold-hearted vectors, then warms them up with playful colours, a heavy dose of humour and sometimes; animation.

Emile's inspiration comes from a vast array of eclectic sources including LEGO, life in Japan, fish, baroque paintings, bubblegum and The Simpsons – to name but a few.

Bodnar, Mark

Mark Bodnar's work springs forth from the long tradition of cartooning, but he succeeds in making it feel contemporary, rather than treating it as a static object of fetish. His paintings exhibit all of the clarity and directness of the great illustrators of the past and his technique is marked by simplicity, contrast and balance. But his greatest strength lies in the meaning behind the images. Bodnar's work feels more like illustrations to stories that have yet to be written. Creating windows into wonderful worlds is magic of the first order. Mark Bodnar is a master of that particular brand of alchemy.
